I agree that the logical end to this does seem unusual. But, in general, an education system that is truly responsive to the abilities of students would be so radically different than what we have today that I’d suspect that the typical issues of racial education inequity would be considerably different and difficult to predict. It seems to me that some experimentation with teaching at the right level would still be worth it even with some concerns about socialization since the end would still mean that all students learn more.
One other thing is that I think that our current system is so ill-equipped to teach at the right level that any system that attempts it would likely be heavily reliant on online education. This seems like it would come with it’s own issues but could also lend itself to solving some of your concerns about socialization — split students into small computer assisted lessons responsive to their ability in different subjects while still allowing for students to spend a lot of socializing time with students of the same age.
